In the 19th century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, potpourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his easily playablecompositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces - with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

He is one of the most widely accomplished and versatile musicians traveling the international circuit today: pianist composer conductor, commentator, entertainer, honorary professor of chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatory of Ghent and guest professor at Yale University (USA). “The original ideal for the 'Variations on Hava Nagila' occurred to me in 1998. Since I had until then only occupied myself with European musical folklore, the idea of conducting research into the folklore of the Near (and somewhat later also the Far) East initially seemed to be something completely new and exotic. This very well-known Hebraic folksong has been retained in its original form here. Each of the variations of my piece for flute and piano, arranged in the classical sequential manner, presents the flutist with a new challenge (staccato, legato, Intervallic leaps, ascending and descending runs, broken chords, etc.). Although the piano has important tasks to perform in the overall structure of the piece, the piano part serves the function of an accompaniment for the most part.” (Dejan Lazic).

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. The great talent of Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) showed very early: At the age of 12, she published her first composition. Georges Bizet, a friend of the family, predicted her great future. After her successful debut as a pianist in Paris in 1877, she began busy concert activities as a solo pianist, chamber musician and conductor in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada.Although many of her compositions became bestsellers during her lifetime, they are almost all missing in the concert programmes of today. Only the Concertino for flute and orchestra Op. 107 is still performed regularly. The demanding piece was written in 1902 as a competition piece at the Paris Conservatoire - initially still with piano accompaniment. The orchestral version was composed by Chaminade two years later. The piece begins with a wide melody and then turns into a virtuoso solo section which is followed by a cadenza. The piece ends with the initial theme as recapitulation and a coda.
